My Top 10 Albums of 2016

(feat. track – Dinosaur Pile-Up – “Bad Penny” [spotify] from Eleven Eleven)

[Posted 1/3/18] So… I was going through the blog to make some updates and found my 2016 “Best Of The Rest” lost in a draft. Of course, I never did get around to doing write-ups of my top albums for 2016 – or even posting them on the main blog! – much less posting what didn’t quite make it. (The list is, and will remain, over at the Top Tens page.)

Still, this blog feels incomplete without the list living here, even sans commentary, so I’m popping in to retroactively post it, along with the Best Of The Rest list I had written up at the time.

So without further ado…

I’ve been terribly neglectful of this here music blog lately.  I’ve been working a ton, and the little downtime I’ve had I’ve been more apt to shut my brain down than fire it up writing something.  I’ve stockpiled a list of 15 or so things I want to write about, and I’m sure that’ll be happening here soon, so expect to see some more content on the way.

In the meantime, I just posted a mix I made to my everyday tumblr, and figured I’d throw it on here as well.  A little slice of Americana that should do ya good for a lazy Sunday morning (or a quiet Saturday night!)

Bon Iver – “For Emma, Forever Ago” (A Cappella)

Bon Iver – For Emma Forever Ago (a capella)

…and while we’re on the topic of bands whose recorded output doesn’t really showcase them at their best, I know everyone and their momma was waxing poetic about Bon Iver’s “For Emma Forever Ago” this time last year, but the CD really left me flat.

This a capella rendition of For Emma, apparently spontaneously performed before a show in France, makes me like Justin Vernon and company a whole lot more than I did before.

Alexa734 – “Blood Bank”

My cover of Blood Bank by Bon Iver

I just heard this song for the first time a few days ago and fell in love with it! This is a really rough recording – there are a few spots that I clearly make mistakes (I’m only human). I don’t have an external microphone (only the built in one on my mac) so there’s an annoying static-y sound in the background. But, I really like how it turned out, and I hope you do too!

I don’t really want to start using this music blog as simply a place to reblog things I’ve found elsewhere on Tumblr.  That’s not really the idea, it’s supposed to be more about my own expression than about “recommendations” or reviews or somesuch.

That said, this is just too good not to pass along.  I’ve never been able to get into Bon Iver, but this brings out the raw pure beauty in the song, it’s visceral and beautiful and sweet and sad, it’s everything a song should be.
